Yoga mats for different styles of Yoga

Choosing a Yoga mat can be a very personal thing but, generally the following types of mat are best for the following styles of yoga:-

Hatha Yoga is practiced for its calming and relaxing affects - it is often a more meditative and less physical style of yoga practice. Larger yoga mats are often best as, (during relaxation) your whole body will be more comfortable with if you can acheive total protection from cold or hard floors.

Iyengar yoga practitioners tend to want mats no thicker than about 4 to 5mm as the emphasis is on control, precision and firm grounding. You may also need to grip the sides of the mat for extra leverage and you do not want to over stretch into wide yoga mats.

Some Ashtanga practitioners like to use cotton - placed on top of a standard Sticky yoga mat. Others use prefer extra heavyweight yoga mats which can absorb the shock and abrasion caused by jumping. Often these mats will also need to be be extra long, (2m or 2.5m long) and wider to help to keep the feet on the mat.

Bikram Yoga causes sweat to build up as the room is heated. Vinyl yoga mats get very slippery when wet and so a towel or a cotton Yoga Mat is more suitable as the grip on the fabric improves the wetter it gets.

Yoga Therapy usually requires thicker, softer mats which offer more comfort for injuries etc. Mats above 6mm thick are best as they offer the most cushioning. If balancing postures are being attempted then a harder mat is needed to stop it wobbling arround under the feet.
