Slipping on a Yoga mat

There are two main ways you can find your hands or feet slipping on a Yoga mat:-

  1. A slow, gradual, creeping effect across the surface of the mat - which usually indicates overstretching in poses or holding them longer than is comfortable, or
  2. A sudden, jerky and quick slide - which is more likely to be caused by moisture if using the popular synthetic, Sticky vinyl mat

Here is some general advice, in brief that may help:-

  1. Wash your mat, dry it completely (as per care advice) and then try again
  2. Put a cotton towel or a blanket on top of the mat
  3. Wear some sticky Yoga gloves or special, sticky five-toe socks
  4. Try a cotton mat cover
  5. Try a different type of vinyl mat
  6. Use a cellomer type foam mat - or natural rubber mat (absorbs moisture) - for a drier grip

There are pros and cons to all of these solutions.
