Yoga mats for different skin types

The fact is that the way that the skin and floor surfaces make contact with the mat surface is crucial - and this is dependant on the condition of... both the skin and the floor !!

Due to our own Kamma, diet, daily routine, stress and other internal and external factors, our skin can be either of three doshas: vata, pitta or kapha.

Skin Type -- Vata

Vata dosha is composed of space and air, and all the characteristics of Vata arise out of these two elements. Vata is light, quick, thin, active and fast, and, because of the absence of the water element, tends towards excessive dryness, rough and flaky.

Skin Type -- Pitta

The Pitta dosha is composed of the elements of fire and water. If you are a Pitta skin type your skin is fair, soft, warm and medium thickness. The tendency is to develop rashes, acne, liver spots or pigment disorders as the skin is usually more sensitive than Vata or Kapha skin types.

Skin Type -- Kapha

Kapha dosha is composed of the elements of earth and water. If you are a Kapha skin type your skin is thick, oily, soft and cool to the touch. Your complexion is pale, and the hair thick, wavy, oily and dark.

It may show up as enlarged pores, excessively oily skin, blackheads or pimples and water retention.

So, different skin types may need to use Yoga mats differently

For example, drier skin may need a rougher surface to stop slipping, wheras a more greasy skin may need more surface contact (a smooth surface maximises this when contacting with the skin).

Similarly - if the mat is on a dusty or slippy floor surface - like a public sports hall then it might be best to make sure the smooth side is face down ?
