Who is Simply Yoga?

Mat and Sati (Directors)

Our brief history...

We first began supplying a few teachers, schools and students via email in 1999 and set up a few HTML pages using a free, personal ISP, and we named the website Simply Yoga, (because that is what we hoped it to be!). As our online sales grew we first started trading from this domain, simply-yoga.co.uk on February 3rd 2001.

We set up online payments and eventually incorporated as a private commercial company about four years later in August 2003.

Back then, there were only a few online shops and so we had to put some distance between what we offer and the markets in North America, we were getting orders from as far as Hawaii!! - and it didn't seem very ecological so we decided to change our name to YOGA.EU LTD in August 2006.

But after a domain name dispute with an internet marketing company based in Germany that owned the domain, yoga.eu we decided to change our name again, this time to the European Yoga Network Ltd. in October 2006.

As time went on it dawned on us that we, (and yoga) were slowly being dragged into an overly commercial health and fitness sector, and so later that month, EUROPEAN YOGA NETWORK LTD converted to YOGA NETWORK C.I.C. (a Community Interest Company) although we have always traded under the name of Simply Yoga.

Since then we changed our name once more, to the much simpler: yoga cic and we are pretty happy with the way things are right now - we don't plan any more name changes!

About the founders...

Co-founder, Sati Witts is an arts graduate who trained as a Theravadin Buddhist monastic in the Thai forest tradition for seven years and is a part-time teacher.

Co-founder, Mat Witts is a Social Entrepreneur who made a personal commitment to yoga in May 1990 after a brief, and seemingly random spiritual episode.

So, what now ?

yoga cic is the worlds' first Yoga Community Interest Company and it runs the worlds' first, (and only) ecological (100% solar powered) yoga community interest network ! and we still trade as Simply Yoga.

Our Community Interest Company status is critical in the development of our aims and objectives. It gives us legal form as a social enterprise and in-built ethical credentials that commercial companies and charities find much more difficult to achieve.

And, what of the future?

We believe that this business can provide an ideal vehicle for those interested in yoga, especially in europe.

Our plan is to secure more investment and financing from private sources, with the possibility of further help from public sector grants and awards.

Our aim is to increase our stocks of ethical and fair trade goods, increase our sales of ethical and fair trade goods, and generally develop and improve the services we can offer to the community.

If you have ideas or suggestions about how more funds, or other resources might be procured, or how funds might be applied to any of the projects contained in this plan for community benefit, then please do contact us.
